Behavioral Sleep Medicine: Evidence-Based Treatments for Sleep Disorders

Presenters' Biographies:  

Daniel Taylor, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Texas. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Memphis and completed his internship at Brown Medical School. He is board certified in both Sleep Medicine and Behavioral Sleep Medicine. In addition, he completed a 12-month extramural training program in cognitive-behavioral therapy at the Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research. He directs the only pre-internship training program in Behavioral Sleep Medicine accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He has over 25 publications and over 100 presentations in the areas of adult and adolescent Behavioral Sleep Medicine. His research focuses on the epidemiology of sleep disorders and cognitive-behavioral therapy of insomnia comorbid with other disorders (e.g., depression, sleep apnea). He has dedicated his career to training more practitioners in Behavioral Sleep Medicine.  

Wilfred Pigeon, Ph.D., CBSM is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Rochester in the Sleep & Neurophysiology Research Laboratory. Dr. Pigeon has received research awards from the Sleep Research Society and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and funding from the National Institutes of Health, the American Sleep Medicine Foundation, the Department of Veterans Affairs and from industry. He chaired the AASMs Behavioral Sleep Medicine Committee from 2005-2008. He is actively engaged in training clinicians in behavioral sleep medicine. His clinical research foci include the psychoneuroimmunology of insomnia and the treatment of sleep disorders with both behavioral strategies and novel hypnotic agents in patients with co-morbid medical and psychiatric disorders such as chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Dr. Valerie McLaughlin Crabtree received her Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi. She then completed an internship and fellowship in clinical child/pediatric psychology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, Division of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. After completion of pediatric psychology training, Dr. Crabtree completed a post-doctoral fellowship in pediatric behavioral sleep medicine at the University of Louisville in the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Crabtree is a licensed psychologist and certified in behavioral sleep medicine. She currently serves as a clinical psychologist specializing in pain and symptom management at St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital. She has over 40 peer-reviewed publications in the areas of pediatric psychology and pediatric behavioral sleep medicine. Dr. Crabtrees research and clinical work has focused on the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral sequelae of obstructive sleep apnea in children, the co-occurrence of ADHD and sleep disturbance in children, and more recently on the impact of cancer treatment on childrens sleep and fatigue. She served on the Behavioral Sleep Medicine committee of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine from 2005-2008 and has coordinated the Behavioral Sleep Medicine certification exam for the AASM from 2006-2008.
